A Different Kind of Dining Experience-Cooking Class Team Building Parties
Tired of the same old Corporate Dinners? Here's a new idea. How about getting the group together and cooking the meal yourself? Corporations are stepping up to the plate, or hot plate, as the case may be and gathering their executives together for an evening or afternoon of team building in the kitchen. Cooking together breaks down the barriers of who's who and brings people together for a few laughs and a great meal. And, yes, you also learn how to cook or at least refresh your memories of savory home cooked meals, which in today's hectic society can be distant memories.
Team building cooking classes can run the gamut of a small department getting together for an outing or a group of national directors who rarely see other. Sitting around a table in the boardroom or a restaurant can be intimidating and difficult for some but those same people have been known to come alive in the kitchen. One participant can surprise another with their cooking skills and become very animated and entertaining. There is always something to be shared and learned. If you leave the event with one new cooking skill or pick up a helpful tip such as how to prepare vinaigrette, or a timesaver such as slicing mushrooms, strawberries and olives with an egg slicer, it is worthwhile. Coworkers can also share their grandmother's cooking tips and bring a smile to the faces of all those present. Anything to make your cooking life at home easier is extremely valuable.
"On behalf of our Executive Committee, I want to thank you and your staff for hosting a very successful and enjoyable team building exercise. I have received numerous compliments on the way in which the program was conducted and the quality of the venue and food.
Thanks again for making our inaugural team building exercise an overwhelming success." Aram Minnetian, Weichert RelocationIn my role as chef/facilitator of many of these events, I have seen people change from reluctant or downright not happy to be there to Chef of the Day! There are many ways this can be done. One Manager from McNeil Nutritionals decided to present each participant with an apron representing their personality. There were aprons with lemons (sunny disposition or sourpuss), animal motifs, and tropical themes (traveler), just to name a few. The presentation of the aprons provided the icebreaker and need I say many, many laughs. The Weichert folks pictured here came with embroidered chef toques and aprons, a very classy touch! Photos are of course, mandatory to commemorate the event. Some photos are requested just to prove to a spouse that they actually "cooked." Another group had to develop dishes that reflected the company's past, present and future. Recipes can be provided or creation of signature dishes can be accomplished with the help of the chef facilitating the event.
Team building cooking classes also teach about other cultures, areas of the country, and the bonding factor is not to be overlooked. Those who cook together, stay together.
Participants are always pleasantly surprised at how much fun they have and what a great meal they can cook. Professional cooking instruction is an added bonus. These events can be individually designed to meet a team's needs, whether it's an existing team that needs to be rejuvenated or a newly formed team that needs to get acquainted. The time and care it takes to prepare a proper Risotto is an exercise in patience. Reading recipes and deciding who will do what can be a challenge and requires cooperation. Wine selection can also be added to the task list and shows courage on the part of the volunteer.
The pinnacle of the event is when the group sits down together to enjoy the fruits of their labor, discuss execution of the raw ingredients and preparation techniques. Valuable memories and bonds have been created. Please don't forget the camera!
